The great 13th century Sufi poet Farid al-Din Attar is renowned as an author of superb short lyrics written in the Persian language. Award-winning Iranian-born poet, Ali Alizadeh, and Persian specialist, Kenneth Avery, have collaborated. For a true sense of the beauty of Hafiz's poetry, try to find 'Fifty Poems of Hafiz" - by y. Fifty Poems of Ḥāfiẓ (Book): Ḥāfiẓ: Translation of a selection of poems from one of the world's greatest lyric poets. First published First off, the selection: the fifty ghazals are chosen out of Hafiz' mammoth corpus of over poems, which means that they cannot even be representative.

The selection here seems, to me anyway, to be calculated to portray Hafiz as a religious, mystically inclined poet in keeping with the American image/stereotype he has acquired. His poems created a new genre of mystical folk poetry in Central Asia and influenced many Sufi/Dervish poets including 'Attar, Rumi, Hafiz (who both knew Turkish) and Yunus Emre.

The book of his poems, the Divan-e Hikmet (Book of Wisdom), consists mainly of gazels and murabbas (foursomes), Kosmos (robi'as srung together) and munajat (prayers).
